In Schiedam one can smell, taste and see jenever (Dutch gin) heritage. The historic buildings in the city centre as well as the highest windmills in the world are a reminder of the time Schiedam was the beating hart of the jenever and gin industry.

Celebrate Dutch Distillers history

From March through June, S'DAM celebrates its Dutch Distillers District with various events. Try over 100 different types of gins, jenevers, cocktails and mocktails during the Jeneverfestival. Enjoy different types of entertainment and discover various hidden gems in the city center during IDDF or visit Proef! de Plantage, a cultural festival with food, cocktails, art and activities for every age.

MEET THE DISTILLERS | Experts in Jenever & Gin in Schiedam

The 18th century was the Gilded Age of Schiedam. At its peak, Schiedam housed 392 active distilleries and mills. The malt wine industry replaced the existing textile industry and herringfishing. The reason for this was the declining liqour export from France.
Schiedam-made gin and jenever was exported all over the world. The industry gave Schiedam the nickname Black Nazareth, as the coal-fired distilleries blackened the city.
