Windmill De Noord

The current Windmill De Noord was built in 1803. The first mention of a windmill being located here was at the beginning of the 15 th century. It is presumed that a wooden windmill was built here around 1400.

One of the five original ‘Schiedam giants’, Windmill De Noord, at 33.3 metres, is one of the tallest in the world.

History

The wooden windmill was replaced by a stone windmill in 1707. A century later the windmill was deemed to be too small. It couldn’t catch enough wind for the growing city. De Noord was taken down and rebuilt closer to the waterfront. The windmill ground malt for the city’s distilleries. At the beginning of the 20th century, the windmill was used to grind animal feed and wheat meal for the bakers.
